YOGA for Beginners

YOGA!!!! Ahhhhhhh my favorite topic. Once I get started on this, it’s difficult for me to stop, believe me my husband can vouch for this. As everybody knows, Yoga started thousands of years ago in India. Although, India is where this excellent activity originated not until recently have the people in India after realizing its healing potential started adopting it. I can tell you I was one of those who were very skeptical of its benefits.  My mother during the late 90’surged me to go along with her to practice yoga, which was offered for free at a center near our home. I went with her for one class and was so bored out of wits, but you can’t blame me I was a teenager in my late teens and it just did not seem so hip. Around the same time, gyms had also started springing up in Bombay (I know it’s Mumbai now, I just refuse to call it Mumbai, and it was and will always remain Bombay for me). As a teenager, I wanted to fit in so running, going to gym, lifting weights somehow seemed way cooler than what my mother was asking me to do. Well, long story short I went my chosen path and my mother her way. Fast forward, 10 years down the line. I was this gym rat who had just given birth to my first child, my mom came over to help me at the time. She was not feeling well, so when we went to the doctor’s here in America, all her tests came out with flying colors. My mother was almost 50 with no signs of blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes or anything else. Even the doctor was shocked. I told them she has been practicing yoga for more than 10 years, to which they said, that probably explains it.  This was a turning point in my life, which is when I decided to pursue YOGA with all my faith in it. It’s been more than 7 years and I can tell you I have never ever regretted that decision ever. I think it is the best Gift India has given to the world, the benefits of which not just this generation but the future generation would also continue to reap.
I have heard so many stories about how people were ridden of diseases they thought they would die with because of YOGA. I feel so connected with my Body, mind and soul by just spending a couple of hours weekly on that mat. It’s like my body yearns for it.
With my limited knowledge of Yoga over the years and from the first teaching from that class that my mother bought me to, I can remember the teacher saying these words – Yoga is a way of cleansing our bodies using the 3 most important elements that GOD has created, JAL (water), VAYU(AIR) and AGNI (FIRE). Example of JAL are – jala neti using the neti pot. Example of VAYU are all asanas that involve breathing techniques like kapalbhati etc. Example of AGNI are all the asanas we do like Surya namaskar that generate heat in our body and cleansing our bodies via the sweat generated.
So, whoever out there, who is going through some tough physical phase in your life, I would encourage you to at least give YOGA a try before you give up and give into medications completely.
So long folks!! Enjoy the deals!!
